Appelvlaai

The national dish of the Dutch is an apple crumble pie. It’s really indulgent; a rich pastry filled with apples and sultanas, cinnamon and sugar. The topping is traditional crumble, and it’s baked.
It is, as you’d expect, utterly delicious. We had it with vanilla ice cream, but it would work just as well with cream or custard.

There’s nothing fancy about it, there aren’t any exotic ingredients, and technically it’s a very easy bake. I think it’s the simplicity that is its brilliance.
Also, the recipe from the RAF cook book makes an absolutely huge portion, so would be great for a dinner party or a big family celebration dinner.
